Bergen Chinese School (BCS) offers two tracks of language classes – Chinese as Heritage Language classes (CHL Track) and Chinese as Second Language classes (CSL Track).  

Chinese as Heritage Language Classes (CHL or Traditional)

This series of classes is designed for students who can practice speaking Mandarin at home. In the classrooms, teachers instruct in Mandarin to facilitate students’ learning.   Students learn to read and write Traditional Chinese characters and begin phonic lessons with bo-po-mo-fo system.  Hanyu Pinyin is taught in 4th grade and Simplified Chinese characters are introduced in 7th grade.    Gradually building up their abilities in Chinese listening and reading comprehensions, communications and literacy, students are generally fluent in speaking and writing of Chinese when they graduate from BCS.

In addition to language art, students have an opportunity to explore Chinese cultures as part of the class curriculum.

Chinese as Second Language Classes (CSL or Practical Chinese)

This series of classes are designed for students who want to learn Chinese regardless of their family backgrounds.  In the classrooms, teachers instruct in English and emphasize word recognition, sentence structures and translation exercises.  Students learn the effective ways to sound, recognize and write Chinese characters and to handle daily conversations such as greeting, shopping, traveling, inquiring information, etc.   Classes use multimedia textbook series:  IQ Chinese Go. ; they learn Traditional Chinese characters and Hanyu Pinyin phonics system.

In addition to language art, students have an opportunity to explore Chinese cultures as part of the class curriculum.

博根中文學校課程簡介

本校課程分為「傳統中文班」及「實用中文班」兩個體系。

傳統中文班:

包括從三歲開始的娃娃班、四歲開始幼稚班，小學部、初中部、及高中部，適合有中文背景基礎的學 生. 課堂上以中文教學，採用國語注音及美洲華語課本，教授正體字，訓練學生在聽說讀 寫四方面齊頭並進。 初中部及以上班級教學內容並加入漢語拼音及簡體字介紹。高中部 教材中更溶入電腦中文打字、及「SAT Subject Test – Chinese」內容(包含聽力、語法及閱 讀) 。 中年級以上的學生 另有一學期數堂的文化課，包括書法、棋藝、 國畫、扯鈴及中 國武術等，增加學生對文化的了解。

實用中文班:

另一個體系則是為任何背景的學生而設計的「實用中文班」，採用 IQ Chinese Go教 材，此套教材採用 中英雙語教學，教授漢語拼音與正體字，教學內容生活化，著重認字， 句型及日常生活會話，所學能馬上在生活中付諸實用。目前「實用中文班」為五歲以上之 學生 開設五班，依照年齡及程度編班。中年級以上的學生 另有一學期數堂的文化課，包 括書法、棋藝、 國畫、扯鈴及中國武術等，增加學生對文化的了解。
